Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia is a cooperative of eleven independent Farmers’ Markets in Nova Scotia, representing more than 450 member businesses. Operation of our markets is estimated to be worth more than $62 million a year to the provincial economy.

Farmers’ Markets contribute significantly to the economic support of local producers and their communities. As entry into retail markets becomes increasingly difficult, Farmers' Markets are successfully providing smaller Nova Scotia farmers and food producers, artisans and artists an opportunity to sell their products to local markets.

In many towns, Farmers' Markets are key components of local economic development programs because they bring shoppers into other businesses and bring business people together in a weekly celebration of local enterprise.

But the economic value of Farmers' Markets goes much beyond that to include the public health and environmental benefits of creating a market (literally) for whole foods produced locally, and their value as informal public education venues, with 11-12,000 socializing customers a week May-October, 4-6,000 people involved weekly the rest of the year.

As a member of Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia, the [market name] has joined a unique enterprise operated by Farmers' Markets throughout the province. Representatives of these markets - most of them producers, and volunteers - have agreed that what drives our work is our wish to help generate a healthy and vigorous economy and social life for our communities.

We believe that sustainable production and responsible marketing of quality local goods is essential to this goal.

So we work together across the province to maintain a communicative network among our markets, producers, and common cause organizations. We share information and experience to support each others' development; we maintain common standards in relation to such things as food safety and product representation, and in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, we produce a distance learning program to support both market and producer business development.
